The Family of Helen Dee would like to express our deep appreciation and gradatitude for the wonderful care given to our mother while she was a resident at Shorrock.
Our mother came to Shorrock in January 2000 after suffering a massive stroke. Defying all odds, she recovered and while she couldn’t walk and was confined to a wheelchair, mom was able to maintain an active role in her family. She saw her grandsons grow up, participate in all family and holiday celebrations, and even attend the wedding of her grandson, Chris. This was in part a tribute to the staff at Shorrock.
When mom passed away on Sept 4th, although her family members were not there with her, she was comforted by her Shorrock family, those people who were so important and integral to her daily life. We were told she passes peacefully and was not afraid. Most importantly, mom was not alone. This meant so much to us, and we know mom felt their care and love.
Over the years there have been so many staff members who have cared for our mother. While we cannot personally thank all those who have been part of mom’s life in the past 10 years, we know that most recently, Manya Kernaghan in Social services; Barbara, Pat and the staff at Brighton; Cheryl, Celia and Jackie were all very important to our mom’s care until the end. There are properly more, and please forgive us not knowing each one.
We thank you all so very much for the care you have shown to mom. We miss her very much and still can not believe she is truly gone from us. We want to let you know how grateful we are to everyone at Shorrock.

Dear Ms. Metzger,
It is with great peace in my heart I write this letter. My mother, Emilia Florio, was living at Shorrock Gardens in the Meadows unit for 12 months, and recently passed away.
My mother was a French immigrant to America, and married into an Italian family after WWll. My father and his family protected her from everyone and everything. It took her a few years to learn English and she was completely dependent upon him. When my father suddenly passed away in 1968, my mother was lost. I was only 16 years old, but I became my mother’s care giver from that time.
When I married, my husband John opened our home to Mom, and she helped raise my four children, now aged 25 – 34.Mom was 100% a part of my family’s life. We all noticed Mom getting a bit weaker, slower and forgetful. She started to get severe panic attacks and needed me with her more and more. Mom became a permanent shadow in my life, and I began to take more and more responsibility for every aspect of her life.
John and I accepted this and spent more time, but unfortunately the panic attacks grew so severe we had to miss some work. My daughter Tara who came home from Ireland every 3 months saw the constant deterioration in my mother’s ability and mine. With some not-so-gentle movements, Tara changed my request from ordering a part-time caregiver in the home to finding a full time assisted living facility for Mom.
Mom was in another assisted living for a few weeks when she became very ill and went to the hospital. She was discharged from the hospital to Shorrock Gardens, Meadow Unit.
This was a terrible time for me, watching my mother deteriorate, and having to move her yet again. However this transition was handled extremely well. Under the direction of Kathy, Mom and I were surrounded by the most caring, supportive, loving people one would ever hope to meet. The respect Kathy and her team showed to Mom and her fellow clients gives me faith in humanity.
I know Kathy had enormous amounts of work to do, however without fail she would take the time out of each daily visit to tell me how Mom was doing – honestly and with respect. Kathy’s team follows that direction – she is a real leader.
I would like to individually commend a number of staff members who I felt worked above and beyond to ensure Mom maintained her dignity. Mom had many “Bad Days” and one of the nurses, Chanel, would put Mom next to her at the nurses’ station to keep her calm. Patti and Jennifer from activities, Sally one of her aides who made my Mom a blanket, Sandra who was the evening charge nurse, Nyiesha and Clarissa who worked on another unit but checked on Mom at night. Staff that made my mother’s life better. Dee, George, Gloria, Allie, Steve, Jessica, Yvonne, Hergis, Sharon, Gladys, Sandra, Katie, Sarah, Rolando, Jazzmine, Karen, and Vivian.
They granted us all the privacy my family and I needed and checked on us at just the right moments to make sure we had everything we wanted during her last days and hours.
You should be very proud of your tremendous team. I would like to thank you all once again for giving my mother the dignity she deserved in her last months.

On behalf of myself and my family, we just wanted to extend our thanks for the attentive care given to my husband, William Isola, who was a short -time resident of the Haven for a month before being transferred to the Meadows. Special thanks should be given to Taylor, who was always attentive to my husband as he had often remarked about how wonderful she was and how much he liked her. She new how to deal with his Alzheimer’s and she even would take the time to visit him occasionally during her break or at the end of her shift when he was transferred to the Meadows. Her dedication and effort should be commended.
In addition, we would also like to acknowledge with special thanks the dedication of Michelle, who also would visit my husband during her own time when he was transferred to the Meadows and who even attended my husbands wake. She should be commended for going up and beyond her job responsibilities as she is such a warm and caring person who should be commended.
In addition, the entire staff at the Meadows was also very attentive and caring workers to my husband during his month and half stay.

My mother, Elizabeth Fusco, was a resident of the Meadows unit of Shorrock Gardens, for almost 5 years, I am a retired RN, so my expectations of level of care are difficult to meet. My visits always include looking for any sign of inadequacy. I changed diapers, checked skin care, hair and fingernail care, even the condition of bathrooms. My mother was not communicative, so I spent many hours watching staff with other patients, as well as my mother.
I want you to know how much my family appreciate the high level of care delivered by Cathy and her staff, for the most difficult patients in our health care system.

Just a short note, very long thanks and passion, for the superlative job done by your team on behalf of my mom, Helen Brown, who passed away 4/13 at evergreen. Ms Parness, in particular, was so kind, and checked on moms’ needs daily, if not more often. The group at Evergreen that I met, Barbara, Michele, Joelle, Charlotte, Maya, Tami, Etal, just outstanding!

I would like to personally thank your staff and a wonderful Social Worker, Ann, who took such terrific care of my mother, Dorothy Dufour, who was in your facility for short-term rehabilitation. I am so very grateful that she was in your facility, a facility that took such great care of her in her time of illness……My mother was my life and I cared for her and loved her dearly and miss her, but I know that being in your facility and the wonderful care she received enhanced her last few weeks with us here on earth. I would highly recommend your Nursing Home. The care and sincere love that your staff gave to my mother was something that everyone wants when ill has overcome a loved one. You must be proud and honored at the way your staff treats their residents.

My mother, Angelina Ordik, was a resident in the Meadows residential unit at Shorrock Gardens until she passed away June 24th.
I wanted to tell you how pleased we were with the staff at the Meadows – Kathy, Tina, Charisa, George, Patty and Ashley. They not only took such wonderful care, but accepted her for the “sometimes difficult person she had become.”
These social people helped me to accept my mother for who she was now, not as I had known her before her illness.
I’m sure I did not mention all the names of her caregivers but please know, each one of the staff were loving, caring people. They did not just take care of my mother but me too.
Please feel free to share this letter with the administrator of Shorrock.

I want to thank the entire staff at “Shorrock Gardens” for the care and attention I received while recovering from major surgery. I particularly give thanks and praise to nurse Dorothy and aide Marie, for their patience and congeniality at night. They helped me in my time of need, during the night shift. An excellent team!!!
Thanks to the day shift as well – too many names to remember each one and all. God Bless all those who help the sick, may God always bless them in his memory.
My very special thanks to the physical therapy dept. May God bless Mr. Jay, Wirt, Will, Ryan, Jamie, Jim and Jackie, etc. Thanks to all the Nurses Patti, Joan, Barbara, Lisa, Rodger, and all those names that escape me. Thanks to Ann the social worker and to Steve and his food dept. Thanks to all the aides that work with the nurses. Special thanks to aide Marie who personally went to McDonald’s and treated me to a milk shake on her day off, because the day before I said I wanted a milk shake. Nurse Joan for her smile, Nurse Lisa who gave me the grand tour of the grounds, for exercise; we had fun. Timmy for the banana I enjoyed and thanks to nurse Antonio and handsome nurse Bob.

For the three weeks recovering from my hip surgery the nursing staff and therapist always go utmost attention to the patients. Our particular nurse when on duty gave her all and in my opinion went above and beyond her duties. The outstanding nurse is Margarhite Tucarico LPN, of the Evergreen section. Her help was most appreciated. I am how home and will remember Shorrock Care Center fondly.
