The Haven at Silverwoods assisted living in Toms River, NJ has been providing excellent, quality care delivered by a core group of experienced, compassionate and constant caregivers since it’s opening in 1992.

At The Haven, continuity and competence is the best medicine. In a nurturing family-style environment, residents and their families return normalcy to their lives, building trusting relationships with the most talented team of caregivers, many of whom have been serving the community for many years. From physical therapists to registered nurses––from housekeeping to dining room staff, the entire team at The Haven bring dedication and experience to enhance residents’ physical, emotional and social well-being.

Administrator Barbara Estabrook, MS, RN, CALA, a valuable member of The Haven for the past 15 years, believes that staff longevity and valuable experience translates to excellence in resident care and relations. “Familiarity of interacting with the same dedicated, hands-on people gives residents a sense of family, and instills security and confidence that is so vital to their well-being. Stability and continuity is our specialty.”

Warm smiles and outstanding services are a Haven mainstay, and they come from the most recognizable sources. Like Wellness Director Charlene Havelka, RN who for over 5 years has worked diligently with the exceptional nursing and physician staff to sustain expert care with the human touch that exceeds the highest industry standards, and Dining Services Director Eileen O’Mara, who since 2007 has developed menus and meal events that exceeds the residents’ tastes and nutritional needs.

James Cino, BS, OTR, has been the leader of The Haven’s therapy team for over 10 years, working tirelessly with residents in the comfort of their own apartments, and any other place on premises where a resident’s safety awareness and strength needs to be heightened. James and his team share the successful therapy techniques developed at his private practice, Adaptive Home Therapy, Inc. In addition to promoting safety, Cino’s program results in significant improvement in a resident’s ability to participate in daily activities, and remain independent for as long as possible.

For the last 6 years, helping people keep active in mind, body and spirit has been the objective and outcome of a comprehensive activity program led by Activities Activities Director, Linda Panarella. ”Without meaningful activities, there may be no reason to get out of bed in the morning”, says Panarella. “We are purposeful in our efforts to make a real difference in the lives of our residents through our interactions with them and the opportunities we bring them.”

Over the past 10 years, Richard E. Adler, DPM has also helped The Haven’s resident population keep active and on their feet by providing state of the art podiatric care in a warm and caring manner. Board Certified in Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Adler offers individual attention, detecting and treating foot problems of every nature, including care for infections and injuries of the foot, ankle and heel.

Benjamin D. Lessig, DO, PA, one of The Haven’s accomplished physicians, has been providing residents with private consultation and primary care since 2007. Board Certified in geriatric medicine, with specializations in Alzheimer’s disease, pain management and chronic illnesses, Dr. Lessig has seen first hand the difference that retention of passionate caregivers has made to The Haven community. According to Lessig, “The Haven’s dedicated nursing and administrative staff, with their diverse experience and deep understanding of residents’ needs, creates a center of excellence for residents requiring assisted living services.”

The staff members mentioned here is but a few of The Haven’s dedicated care and service providers. With the development of this seasoned team of compassionate caregivers The Haven sets it self apart from others. The residents and their families are secure in knowing they have outstanding caring and consistency to their lives which bring immeasurable peace of mind. Located here in Ocean County, The Haven at Silverwoods is a Hovnanian Senior Housing Services community which is a family owned and operated organization for more than 50 years.

The banner in the front lobby reads, “Caring for each resident with compassion is our pledge to you at Holiday Care Center.” Ask the residents and families who come here. Talk to the doctors who oversee their care. You’ll discover that care giving at Holiday is not only compassionate, it’s on a world-class level.

Located in Toms River, Holiday Care Center is one of Ocean County’s most trusted nursing and rehabilitative facilities, serving the local community with a wide array of specialized services including 24/7 care for the chronically ill, as well as sub-acute and convalescent care, and a state-certified Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care program.

At Holiday Care Center there’s a dedication to excellence in every aspect of senior care and living. People in need of specialized care for chronic illnesses such as diabetes, rehabilitative services, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and more, thrive in an environment where their needs are extraordinarily satisfied by highly skilled physicians and senior care professionals.

“Just about anything that can make a difference in a resident’s physical or social well-being, Holiday Care Center puts into action,” boasts Donna Schwartzman, Administrator. “Living arrangements are resident-focused, with high quality amenities & services, delicious and nutritious dining choices, and a full schedule of physical and social activities.”

Highly-respected professionals help make the difference in providing quality care. By earning a reputation for the best possible care, Holiday Care Center has been able to attract skilled physicians such as Dr. Edward M. Maron of Shore Medical Specialists in Toms River and Lakewood. “Holiday Care Center has one of the best clinical management programs for long-term care” says Dr. Maron. “They have on-going internal monitoring programs so they can continue to exceed the industry standards in both sub-acute care and long term care. I, as a physician have full confidence in treating my patients there.”

Dr. Parikh, another of Holiday’s renowned physicians, delivers world-class care on a local level. “I have been an attending physician at Holiday Care for 11 years. I refer a large percentage of my patients to this nursing home.” Dr. Parikh continued, “I have confidence in the care and services delivered to my patients at Holiday. When I admit someone to Holiday Care I know they will receive the best care and will be clinically managed by a professional and committed team.”

Holiday Care Center is able to deliver the highest quality care by maintaining competent, qualified nurses like Joann Curry, who was awarded the prestigious title of “New Jersey Licensed Practical Nurse of the Year” in 2011. Additionally, the entire team of concerned caregivers and aides routinely respond to the requests and needs of residents and families, and demonstrate a higher level of care, kindness and understanding for their patients.

Holiday Care Center has created the most supportive environment for people to heal and get healthy. “From the moment you walk in the front lobby there is a sense of warmth and comfort.” says Pat and Sal Delmastro. “My dad is in his 4th year residing, and is being cared for by nurses and aides at Holiday Care Center who have empathy and work hard. Everyone knows the residents’ names and cheers them on, no matter what the capacity of the patient. The activities are ongoing with staff who always seem so patient and loving.”

Seeing in person the high level of care that their loved ones receive at Holiday Care Center is a comfort for concerned families. Rene Cantwell is the spouse of a Holiday Care Center resident of over 2 years and says, “Every department provides excellent service from dining services, to clean rooms, fresh laundry and wonderful activities with something for everyone.”

With ongoing Four- of Five-Star ratings for quality measures by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Holiday Care Center’s dedication to quality care giving is evident. But Holiday Care Center has even higher standards to live up to: their own. Every year an outside agency conducts resident satisfaction surveys at Holiday Care Center. Within these surveys, Holiday has received over 90% approval ratings and over 90% of residents would recommend Holiday Care Center to a friend in need of a nursing care facility.

Perhaps the most meaningful seal of approval comes from Holiday Care Center’s own residents, like Stephanie Ball. “I have been a resident for 7 years. I had nothing to compare it to when I first arrived, but I quickly came to learn that Holiday had a well-trained and caring staff. It is a clean building with excellent food and many choices for activities. I can’t speak for others, but I believe they too would say that they have all experienced wonderful things here.”

Holiday Care Center’s physicians, residents, and family members certainly agree to that. Come see for yourself the wonderful care and services being provided daily at Holiday Care Center. 4 Plaza Dr. Toms River, NJ 08757 (732) 240-0900

The best doctor. The latest, most effective treatment. The finest and most conveniently located hospital. When a loved one is about to undergo a serious medical procedure, these are the decisions that get the most scrutiny because lives can change forever based on those decisions. Unfortunately, not enough time is spent thinking about what happens when your loved one is discharged from the hospital, but in need of care before being ready to go home. This is another critical decision – where to go for “transitional care.”

The treatment a person receives during this transitional period is crucial. Families who have made Shorrock Gardens Care Center their transitional care choice have seen the difference that expert care and compassion can make in getting their loved ones healthy and back home again. Located in Brick, on the border of Lakewood and Toms River, Shorrock Gardens Care Center is equipped to deliver world-class care on a local level. With a dedication to excellence, this multi-purpose complex has been able to assemble a team of highly skilled professionals to serve the community with the most comprehensive physical, occupational, speech, rehabilitative care and therapy. Among Shorrock Gardens Care Center’s specializations are the treatment of stroke, vascular and wound recovery, cardiac rehabilitation, and more.

It’s been more than 10 years since Shorrock Gardens Care Center first began positively impacting the health and well being of Ocean County’s seniors. Wendy Metzger, Administrator at Shorrock Gardens Care Center, credits her team of highly skilled professionals for providing the highest quality care. “What really sets Shorrock Gardens apart from the pack is our staff. Our staff are well trained, compassionate and treat everyone like they are family.” Ms. Metzger continued, “Shorrock is a warm and friendly place to recuperate following a hospital stay.”

Shorrock Gardens accepts patients from all nearby hospitals, and has the experienced staff, and state of the art services in place to meet even the most extraordinary transitional care situations and needs such as treating the mom who requires post-hospital IV therapy treatment for an infection, tending to the dad who’s still weak from congestive heart failure, customizing the right program for a loved one who needs to build up muscle strength following a long hospital stay or after a fall. Numerous patients come to Shorrock to treat temporary confusion following a surgical procedure using general anesthesia, and many more come here to connect with specialized pain management treatment, as well as therapeutic activity programs to aid orthopedic rehabilitation following a fracture.

At Shorrock Gardens Care Center healing is more than a process; it’s a one-person-at-a-time devotion. So whether it’s tracheostomy care, care following chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or inpatient hospice and respite care, patients’ specialized needs are served on the most intimate level. Living in a nurturing environment where they receive daily and dignified attention, patients are more eager to divert themselves from their health challenges, and focus on taking advantage of the special programs and activities that will help them regain physical and emotional wellness.

As the place that will transition patients from the hospital to their cherished home, Shorrock Gardens Care Center takes extra care to give their multi-purpose nursing care facility a uniquely home-style look and feel. Divided amongst five connected wings, each dedicated to short or long-term care, you’ll notice residences with covered patios, an enclosed courtyard with a gazebo, bedrooms with Queen Anne style cherry mahogany furnishings, private dining rooms, and even more of the comforts of home. Providing a sense of home and belonging and respecting their individuality is important to residents’ well being.

Of course, one mustn’t lose sight of the fact that health and wellness is a business, and getting back on your feet again comes with a price. Helping families navigate through the financials is another comfort the staff at Shorrock brings to patients and families. While most post acute hospital stays are covered under the Medicare program, at Shorrock, each case is individually determined based on your skilled nursing care needs. Aetna and Medicaid are also accepted. Wendy Metzger has advice for families concerned with the cost of transitional care, “come see us before you are in desperate need for post hospital care so you don’t get sold the wrong choice for you. We offer free tours at Shorrock Gardens and are always here to answer any questions.”

———————————————————————————————————-

Shorrock Gardens Care Center is one of the leading nursing care facilities offering area residents a variety of healthcare services and a broad continuum of care, including short-term post-hospital rehabilitative care, traditional long-term care, secure memory care units, and an attached Alzheimer’s Assisted Living section called The Haven at Shorrock Gardens.

For more information, call us at (732) 451-1000 or visit us at Shorrock Gardens Care Center, 75 Old Toms River Road, Brick, NJ 08723

Tess Huetz has always led a full and active life. Like many older seniors, still healthy and vibrant, she wasn’t about to slow down. However, living all alone in a big house had become more challenging every day. Friends and family agreed that the ideal situation would be moving to a place where her vibrant life could continue, but in the comfort of her very own home. After much searching, Tess found that ideal situation and more at Silverwoods.

A beautiful age-restricted community of spacious, garden-style apartments, Silverwoods Independent Living in Toms River has earned the finest reputation with residents and their families alike. It all begins by catering to seniors’ zest for living with the most ambitious schedule of activities and events.

Since moving into Silverwoods in October, Tess has taken full advantage of the many opportunities to stay active and involved. “I haven’t changed my lifestyle at all. I’m sooo busy,” Tess says. “I love all of the off-campus trips we go on. The Cape May Lobster House was a wonderful time. Monday nights the bus goes to Seaside Heights and you can walk the boardwalk. Sunday, there’s a bus to the Pavilion at Island Beach. Tomorrow we’re going to the delicious Apple Orchards in Colts Neck. Their pastries are famous! Once a month there’s an outing to see Frankie Fingers in concert at the Crab’s Claw in Lavallette. And if you like Atlantic City, we go as a group every other week.”

One can truly feel the pulse of this active community at the expansive clubhouse. Here, Silverwoods residents gather for all kinds of entertainment, exercise classes, social gatherings, informative lectures and more. Tess keeps engaged in all that the clubhouse offers. “There’s an indoor pool, and a library with a fireplace. In the living room they have concerts and play Bingo, although Bingo bores me to death,” she says wryly. “ I love the Tai Chi classes, the indoor pool, exercises, the treadmill. I’ve used the bike and other machines too.”

The clubhouse is also the setting for everyone’s favorite social event – dinner. According to Tess, the full course dinners, from appetizers to dessert, are superb. “Charles is the Chef, and he’s very anxious to help and please everyone. He makes sure everyone is happy and having fun.”

But it’s the friendships that make for truly enjoyable times. “I found new friends, and we have dinner every night,” Tess says. “Six of us at a table. We all get dressed up and meet and talk about our day. I love it.”

Silverwoods’ central location was a major selling point for Tess. A short drive from Holiday City, (another Hovnanian Senior Development, and her home for over 30 years), Tess can maintain her longtime relationships with friends. “The other night, I invited six friends from Holiday City to dinner at the Silverwoods restaurant, and they learned all about my new home. I invited them back for drinks and we all had a good time. I’m always showing off my apartment to my friends. I’m so happy here.”

Silverwoods’ Director Katie Davis says it’s a combination of factors that make Silverwoods a great move for active seniors. “The quality of life we offer is outstanding. The location keeps residents close to family and the area’s great attractions. We’re financially better for seniors, too. Most facilities ask for upfront money. We don’t. This saves our residents thousands and thousands of dollars.”

Tess absolutely beams when talking about her apartment.

“I selected the lovely two bedroom model with one bathroom and walk in closets, she says excitedly. “I use one of the bedrooms as a den. My son from Massachusetts sleeps there when he visits. I love it!”

One would think that moving out of her home of 30 years would be a life-changing experience. But for Tess, only her address has changed. Not her lifestyle.

As the Silverwoods bus returns Tess home from the mini-mall, and stops at the covered bridge across from her unit, she eagerly plans her night’s activities. “I’m going to put away my shopping and then get dressed for dinner. Maybe the blue top with the white slacks?”

Part of a continuum-of-care campus in Toms River, Silverwoods is one of the areas first and most highly regarded independent living residences. Delivering a high level of service, stressing independence, building long-term relationships with residents and families, and promoting active lifestyles, has created a new standard for affordable senior living.

Toms River, NJ –– A new year, a new voyage, and the oh-so wonderful Caribbean Islands! That’s what’s in store as Arbors Care Center temporarily hoists its anchor, and transforms itself into the pride of all vacation cruise ships, the Royal Arbor, “The Nation’s One and Only Floating Palace.” For the community of residents, caregivers, and staff, this special weeklong celebration is the most anticipated event of the year.

Well-known for providing individually tailored skilled nursing and therapy services for area seniors, Arbors will push its hospitality skills from the delicious, to the exotic, to the wildly entertaining. Without ever leaving the dockside, each day of this vacation cruise ship-styled festivity will bring a new Caribbean island destination and an activity-packed itinerary, which residents can fully immerse themselves in. Beginning with Aruba on Monday, the five-day extravaganza will continue on to The Bahamas Tuesday, followed by Barbados, Jamaica, and winding up on the island of St. Martin. Sunny skis and temperatures in the low 80’s should be the norm.

To help ramp up the celebration, and really get into the spirit of things, each day residents will dress up to match that day’s unique theme. Mardi Gras Day, Fiesta Day, Casino Day and Western Day will feature entertaining live music by local bands, dancing, singing, an education of island culture, and of course the sumptuous meals.

The vacationers, aka Arbors residents, will be engaged by the most rigorous agenda on the seven seas. From sittercise on the Lido Deck, to rise & shine poolside, men’s and women’s poker clubs in the ship’s casino, sensory lane on Deck 3, and more, there will be a full schedule of physical, intellectual, and social activity. Keeping everyone busy in mind, body and spirit is crucial to promoting health and well-being. Delivering the highest level of care and promoting active lifestyles has made Arbors Care Center one of the most highly regarded and recognized nursing homes in the area.

All hands will be on deck to ensure “Cruise Week 2011” is one of the most memorable experiences ever for Arbors’ residents.

John Amory, Administrator, will take on the added responsibility of ship’s captain, in overall charge of the ship, hospitality operations and guest services. By shared coincidence, Amory descends from a long line of ship captains. Noticing the irony, Amory said whimsically, “There has been a ship’s captain in almost every generation of my family. My brother is a captain and builds his own boats. I have an uncle who was in the Merchant Marines. Going way back, an ancestor of mine, Captain John Amory of Boston, was a government-sanctioned privateer. I guess it’s in my veins.” No doubt, with Amory at the helm, a dedicated staff on deck, and non-stop waves of fun and entertainment on the menu, “Cruise Week 2011” at Arbors Care Center will be a week to remember.

An integral part of H. Hovnanian Industry’s 55-acre continuum of care campus, Arbors Care Center serves 120 residents for both long and short term stays. The campus also includes Silverwoods, an independent living community, and The Haven at Silverwoods, an assisted living residence for individuals who need help on a more limited basis. For those individuals requiring rehabilitative services, Arbors Care Center offers postoperative and orthopedic care, all under the direction of a licensed physician. Professional nurses supervise health care around the clock, and a physician is always on call. Arbors Care Center offers three levels of care: traditional long-term care, post-hospital rehabilitation (short-term care) and respite care services.

JoAnn Curry is many things to many different people. To her three grandchildren, this vibrant grandma is “Meemah”. Her friends know JoAnn as a HUGE Pittsburgh Steelers fanatic. Fellow colleagues and residents at Toms River’s Holiday Care Center, know her as “kind”, “loving” and “devoted”. Now, friends, family, and the entire Garden State can call JoAnn Curry by her well-deserved title, NJADONA (New Jersey Association Directors of Nursing Administration) LPN of the Year.

Donna Schwartzman CSW, LNHA, Administrator at Holiday Care Center, has been one of JoAnn’s most vociferous boosters. “JoAnn is a strong leader who is slight in stature, which is no match for the enormous ownership or energy that she demonstrates when caring for the residents and managing the staff. She understands the balance required of being kind and gentle, while being in a position of authority to get the best outcomes for residents and staff.”

For almost 18 years, JoAnn has been a dedicated nurse at Holiday Care Center. The 180 bed facility in Toms River provides a wide array of specialized 24/7 nursing care, including care for chronically ill residents, those in need of sub acute care, rehab services, physical, occupational, speech therapy and more. The beloved and well-respected LPN has served as a staff nurse on each of the facility’s three nursing units. Since 2000, she has been a Supervisory Nurse, and for nine years the Unit Manager of Jefferson Unit, a 60 bed Long Term Care residence.

In the strong opinion of Robin L. Clausen, BSN, RN, C and Holiday Care Center Director of Nursing, the recognition is further testament to JoAnn’s meticulous dedication to her patients and staff, and speaks to her initiative to resolve issues. “JoAnn leads her staff by example in demonstrating and requiring that standards of care be met and exceeded. She can be found routinely responding to the requests and needs of residents, families and visitors, vendors and staff. JoAnn is always moving, answering call bells, assisting with personal care and participating in care conferences and other agendas.”

There are episodes in every life that become defining moments. JoAnn Curry remembers being a patient and having a nurse who was cold, unsupportive and without compassion. This unsettling experience was a turning point for JoAnn, and a blessing for her future patients and fellow caregivers. “It was horrible feeling not being well and not having someone to be supportive and make a difference in your recovery.” She reflects fondly on what her favorite nursing school teacher told her about being a nurse. “This is a tough profession. You have to be committed. You have to love it. Keep your sense of humor. And no matter what you do, be honest, compassionate, true to your profession, and you will always do well.”

Outside of nursing, the life and times of JoAnn Curry begins and ends with family. “My children are my heart and my soul,” she says passionately. Married with four grown children and three grandchildren, they all meet for Sunday dinner in her home each week. Her oldest granddaughter gets the special bonus of making traditional Italian cookies with her grandmother.

Care, kindness and understanding have always been crucial to care giving. Today so is something called MDS 3.0, a powerful organizational software tool, which the nursing care industry is transitioning to – but not without its technical hiccups. Holiday Care Center recently introduced MDS 3.0, and according to Robin Clausen, JoAnn went above and beyond to help through the technological transition. “While learning the process herself, she spent endless hours assisting the MDS coordinator to accomplish this overwhelming task. It was during this time that JoAnn showed her extraordinary leadership skills. Her wonderful sense of humor, energy and determination were instrumental in completing this transition process.”

Too busy to take a break from the profession she has devoted a lifetime to, JoAnn continues to share her compassion, joy, and specialized talents to positively impact lives. Whether its passing out meal service, answering a call in the early morning hours, or counseling a staff member, JoAnn can always be counted on to get the job done. “JoAnn has tremendous energy and I don’t see her slowing down anytime soon, and that is our good fortune. We look forward to JoAnn having many more years to come at Holiday Care Center, continuing to do what she does best, providing excellent leadership to the staff and delivering great care to the residents.” When New Jersey’s next LPN of the Year is being considered, JoAnn Curry will be an almost impossible act to follow.

Holiday Care Center is one of Ocean County’s most highly regarded nursing and rehabilitative facilities. Its diverse and specialized services include 24/7 care for the chronically ill, as well as sub-acute and convalescent care, and a state-certified Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care program.

It’s another eventful day inside the full-service community clubhouse at Silverwoods, the area’s most affordable age-restricted, gated community spread out over 55 acres in Toms River, NJ. In the exercise room, a woman is engaged in her favorite Tai Chi class. It’s obvious that she takes her exercise seriously. But then again, 88 year old Estelle Fitzpatrick has never been one to sit idly by. That was until back to back record-setting snowfalls piled 6 foot high snow drifts up against the front door of her Lavallette cottage, and held her hostage in her own home.

“This last snowstorm was the worst”, says Estelle, relaxing in the beautifully decorated living room of the one-story garden apartment she moved into March 1.“ I couldn’t open the door to get out. My son finally said, “That’s it. Pack up.”

Estelle did pack up, and briefly lived with her children. But being one who cherished her independence, perhaps even more than most, Estelle knew that for her, having her own place was the only option. Naturally her children were concerned and wanted their mom to find a place close by to their Toms River homes. So the search and the trepidations began. But ended just as fast. Upon Estelle’s first visit to Silverwoods, she knew she was ready to unpack for good. “Once I walked in here, I made up my mind. I was very impressed. I’m very independent.”

Silverwoods promotes individuality by the very way it is constructed. Unlike those 4 and 5 story hotel-style facilities with elevators, here residents live in large one-story garden-style apartments with wooded views, patios, porches and privacy. People can bring their own furniture, beds, linen and set up their home to suit their own taste. For people like Estelle, who cherish their freedom, Silverwoods is ideal. Residents can enjoy all the freedoms and support that inspires individuality and self-esteem.

Katie Davis, Executive Director of Silverwoods says Estelle’s story is a microcosm of so many other senior experiences. “People become overwhelmed running a house all alone. They realize that the house is just too much to maintain. They come here to get rid of the daily hassles, and focus on enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle. We’re here to take care of their needs.”

A full schedule of activities at Silverwoods creates an atmosphere that inspires enthusiasm and confidence, which is especially crucial to newer residents still adapting to life away from the homes they knew. Says Katie Davis, “There’s always activity going on– trips, Women’s and Men’s Clubs, resident associations, opportunities to meets lots of people.” Ms. Davis added, “Estelle was excited about being here. 30 inches of snow on the ground may have cinched it.“

Settling into a community where she could keep active on a daily basis was a vital consideration for this former Brooklynite and long time Jersey Shore resident. She has always brought boundless energy and passion into every corner of her busy life, from loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to career woman and active force in the community. While President of the Seaside Chapter of Deborah Hospital, Estelle was a tireless supporter and fundraiser. Her many efforts included organizing trips to the British Isles, Hawaii and Aruba.

Though barely a month has passed, Estelle is obviously very taken with her new home and stimulating environment. “My place is very nice. Lovely. Very impressive. For someone like me, if I don’t like something, I don’t stay with it.” She continued, “I truly have everything here. They have exercise classes, a heated indoor swimming pool, and a library. I love to read. Two to three books a week. They have Saturday morning bus trips to the mall. I love to shop, too.”

Silverwoods also features a clubhouse with restaurant, a billiards room, card room, and more. But one can’t live on amenities alone. There is a dinner meal served restaurant-style in the dining room seven days a week. How does Estelle rate the culinary offerings? “The dining room is excellent – the food is delicious.”

The Silverwoods community is friendly and intimate, with many shared experiences and common bonds leading to future friendships. “I’ve met wonderful people here”, says Estelle. “Every day I meet someone new. I met three lovely ladies at brunch on Tuesday” (Silverwoods offers a brunch for its residents and the outside community every Tuesday). Yesterday at the luncheon trip to the Via Amalfi Restaurant I met a woman who comes from the same area of Brooklyn that I do. She knew everything about Bay Ridge.”

It’s impossible to look at the dynamic lifestyle that Silverwoods offers, and not think about what the price tag of it all might be. Cost is a major concern for seniors living on a fixed income. As it turns out, Silverwoods is remarkably affordable. The garden apartments are not only bigger than most, but their monthly rates are cheaper than the competition. The current running special offer could save new residents up to $2,400 a year.

At Silverwoods you get all the features, services and amenities you need to enjoy an independent lifestyle, without tying up your nest egg. With no entry or endowment fees, one low monthly fee covers your choice of 5 different floor plans. Every apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, individually controlled air conditioning and heating, a cozy enclosed porch and patio, pendant and pull cord security system monitored 24-hours a day, smoke detectors connected to an around-the-clock security system, full bathrooms with safety bars, window treatments and wall-to-wall carpeting in each home.

Research has shown that meaningful activities and social relationships are integral to happy, healthy living. Promoting the highest level of well being possible, and satisfying residents’ zest for living so completely is what continues to separate Silverwoods from other senior facilities in the area.

As the next month’s calendar of ever-expanding events arrives at her door, Estelle eagerly grabs for it and anticipates the new possibilities it will bring. “I’m still unpacking. I haven’t caught up with all there is to do here. And I have a long way to go.”

Part of a continuum-of-care campus in Toms River, Silverwoods is one of the areas first and most highly regarded independent living residences. Delivering a high level of service, stressing independence, building long-term relationships with residents and families, and promoting active lifestyles, has created a new standard for affordable senior living.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — To those families becoming over-matched by an aging parent’s growing needs, and looking for the best path to take, the people at The Haven at Silverwoods have something to say to you: “Come talk to us, we can help.”

Part of the Silverwoods continuum-of-care campus in Toms River, The Haven is one of the area’s first and most highly regarded assisted living communities. Delivering a high level of care, stressing independence, building long-term relationships with residents and families, and promoting active lifestyles, they have created a new standard for senior living.

As attractive as its reputation and standard of excellence is The Haven’s non-institutional setting. Serenely located on a 55-acre property, it has the look and feel of a residential community, that happens to offer assisted living services. The private residences are one-level, spacious apartments ranging in size from studios to deluxe one bedroom units, many with outside patios and woodland views. As unique as the people who occupy them, there’s something for every taste and budget.

Living in the privacy of their own beautiful and spacious homes raises expectations, and makes for a more comfortable transition for everyone. Barbara Estabrook Administrator says, “It’s not like going to a 3 or 4 story facility with an elevator. What separates us is we introduce individuality. In this garden apartment setting residents bringing their own belongings including their furniture; all the pieces come together to become their home. Only the geography has changed.”

Another comfort is the fact that each apartment is equipped with a 24/7 emergency response system to bring immediate medical attention should the need arise.

A sense of family comes from being family-owned

Preserving the family dynamic is not only important to the residents, but also to the family who has owned The Haven since it’s inception. Integrating family ethics into their care giving approach is natural, and sets The Haven apart. Everything is done to create a sense of home and belonging. As a result, residents at The Haven find a comfort level that’s so vital to their well-being. Says Barbara Estabrook, “Management has allowed us to develop an operation run like a very large household. Many of our staff, aides and therapists have been with us for over a decade. So what you see is lots of congeal, warm relationships and interactiveness between our staff, our residents and their families.”

In addition to providing comfortable accommodations, The Haven’s team of supportive caregivers brings peace of mind to residents and families with the promise to make this new life journey a rewarding one. And it all begins with a daily mandate: nurturing and supporting seniors’ zest for living.

Senior living-in action

At The Haven, you can feel the pulse that comes from being part of an energetic and vibrant community. Promoting the highest level of happy and healthy living possible, residents are encouraged to keep active in mind, body and spirit. And those are the objectives of the comprehensive activity programming, which includes a full calendar of physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual opportunities for each resident.

With an unbridled and vigorous agenda in place, the term “senior moments” takes on a whole new meaning. From craft classes, a cooking club and horticultural classes to daily exercises and more, the choices are fun and interesting. Again, choice is the key, as residents are free to fill their schedules however they choose. The Men’s Club meets regularly for poker, shuffleboard and bumper pool, while the ladies have theme parties like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Queen for the Day, to name a few. “We’re meant to be mobile, active and social” says Barbara Estabrook. She continued, “Having activity going on, and interacting with other people gives our residents latitude to enhance their lifestyle.”

Word games, trips and outings, and performances from professional entertainers bring new dimensions of joy. Four times each year residents can mix with grade-schoolers when “Care Giver Kids” of Berkeley Twp. Elementary School visits The Haven for crafts, games and lively discussion. There are even resident-led Sunday services. Residents regularly report how thankful they are for the many ways their days are filled with activity and meaning. Playing together, praying together, growing, laughing and staying fit together makes their quality of life, frankly, livelier.

With so many social settings in place, residents can share stories, life experiences, and reminisce on fond nostalgia. As a result, surprising interactions and common bonds often develop into new and meaningful friendships.

Support with a personal touch

Care at The Haven is attentive but not intrusive, emphasizing a resident’s strengths rather than weaknesses. The experienced professional caregiving team evaluates the level of assistance needed to complement each individual’s current capabilities, without undermining their feeling of self-reliance. Residents can choose to see their own physicians, but the Haven has arrangements with outside professionals to provide on-site care such as physical therapy, podiatry and more. This option is a real benefit for the resident, and the family, especially those living at a distance who otherwise would be forced to leave work, or cancel plans to make a personal trip. With their lives no longer disrupted by managing their parent’s minute-to-minute care and well-being, sons and daughters can assume their more natural roles of sons and daughters.

A higher level of care for every economy

The Haven is committed to keeping services affordable, and the care for those living within The Haven community is unmatched. This is accomplished with an inclusive package, including three dietician planned meals, regularly scheduled visits with a registered nurse, weekly housekeeping, a full social agenda, and 24/7 security with an emergency response system connected to every apartment and monitored around the clock. Additional services are also available, including in-house Occupational and Physical Therapy and Memory Care Services. All things considered, The Haven is the most affordable assisted living residence in the area (even more cost-effective than most 24-hour live-in caregiver services!) .

The opportunity of a lifetime

Like anyone making a life transition, seniors need to feel confident and enthusiastic about their future. That said, residents could not be in a better place than The Haven, because The Haven, with all that it offers, is best prepared to enhance the value of their lives. People can truly thrive in an environment where their cherished sense of freedom is preserved, their needs are cared for, their security is protected, and an ever-expanding program of activities brings new possibilities to their days.
