Events benefit various charities and boost awareness for causes
BRICK, NJ—In addition to providing the elderly with rehabilitation services, nursing care, specialized dementia care and assisted living, Shorrock Gardens Rehabilitation & Care Center coordinates the involvement of residents, families, staff and friends in numerous community and charity projects spread throughout the calendar year. According to Wini Caprio, Assistant Administrator at Shorrock, “The idea is to stress the importance of group outreach efforts in the community and to create a sense of empowerment for the residents as they provide valuable services and support to others in need.”
While outreach programs and activities vary from year to year, these have consistently been among the most popular at Shorrock:
Job Sampling Program of Brick High School
A program that assists disabled students ages 14-21 in developing job skills; the goal of the Job Sampling Program is to help prepare students for future independence. Groups of 10 students, lead by their teacher Karen Morrison, spend four mornings a week working in the kitchen and dining room. Ms. Morrison has reported tremendous progress in the skills of the students, as well as dramatic increases in self-confidence and self-worth.
Journeys Program
Upon completion of the Job Sampling program, disabled graduates of Brick High School ages 22-25 are eligible for the Journeys Program. These grads work in various departments at Shorrock, developing important life skills and gaining a sense of responsibility. Under the supervision of program instructors Cindy Caprio and Justine Kosmowski, participants truly enjoy the routine of coming to work and being treated just like the rest of the staff. The program has been extremely successful, instilling a sense of pride in their work.
Alzheimer’s Fundraising
Various fundraising activities for Alzheimer’s awareness, research and treatment go on throughout the year at Shorrock, including team participation in the nationally recognized “Memory Walk.” This past year Shorrock was proud to donate approximately $5,000 to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Toys for Tots
Residents gain a real sense of purposefulness, reaffirming their value as citizens when they assist the US Marine Corps in its annual toy drive in December for needy children. Working together, participating families and staff see the benefits first-hand.
Giving Tree
Another holiday season favorite, residents and staff have provided gifts for needy Ocean County families for the past several years. This year Shorrock assisted employees in need with matching funds from the Company.
Super Bowl Soup Drive
A yearly drive in which cans of soup are collected between January and February, and presented to Visitation Church in Brick.
Teachers BBQ
To show appreciation for the teachers at Lake Riviera Middle School in Brick, Shorrock sponsors an annual barbecue in June.
Ongoing Efforts
Staff and residents organize numerous fundraising events, such as cookie, bake and snack sales. Various raffles include gift baskets, tickets to major sporting events, and more.
